Lord of the Rings and the Weta Cave

New Zealand has a thriving film industry.  The Lord of the Rings movies were made here and many special effects are born by Weta productions.  We decided to do a half day Lord of the Rings tour to see some of the filming locations close to Wellington.  There's a book available which gives all of the locations throughout New Zealand and we've seen some of them on previous visits.  Very few of the locations are marked.
This time we have a guided tour and heard some stories about the filming too.  We visited the locations of the Hobbiton Woods, Gardens of Isengard, Fords of Isen, Dunharrow, Helms Deep and Minas Tirith.

We had afternoon tea at Rivendell and our guide, Laura, posed at the spot in Rivendell where Orlando Bloom had his publicity shot taken.  So many people were standing here for photos that they have added a platform to stop damage to the tree.

On Sunday we visited the Weta Cave, a special effects company.  We saw a short DVD about the various films that Weta has worked on, including the Narnia movies, Lord of the Rings trilogy, District 9 and Tin Tin among others.  It was interesting to see hour the props and effects are made.  The Cave had many collectibles and props as well as some life sized models.
