The best laid plans....

In the words of John Steinbeck, The best laid schemes of mice and men, often go awry.

So it was with our planned visit to the Vatican on Monday when Cherryl was struck down by what can best be described as the Italian version of "Delhi Belly".  After a day resting in the hotel and on a water diet she was well enough to travel to Naples on Tuesday, where Robert succumbed to the same thing.  Another day in the hotel and a cancelled tour to the Isle of Capri.  Oh well, them's the breaks.  This is our first experience of any illness on this trip, so we have been pretty lucky.  Our wallets have benefited as our diet for the past week has been pretty much bottled water, iced tea, lemon granita (slushies) and honey purloined from the hotel's breakfast room.  We will be taking it easy in Rome for a few days.

Our train trips from Rome to Naples and return were really good.  We had booked seats on the high speed Frecciarossa Italian bullet train for these journeys and we covered the approximately 250km journey in just over an hour.  The seats were comfortable, the carriages air-conditioned, toilets very clean and on the return journey we had a food and drink service with snacks and drinks similar to an airline.  The cost was 29 euros per person each way - Highly recommended.

We relaxed as we travelled through market gardens, green valleys, past hilltop towns and photogenic countryside at 300kph.
