A Day Trip in the Outback

We decided to spend a day in the air conditioned comfort of our car and do a round trip drive into the countryside.

Our first stop was at Emmet, about 50km from Isisford.  This little town has a railway station building with a restored ticket office and waiting room.  The local cattle could do some damage with their long horns.

Then it was on to Yaraka.  This area is not completely flat and we could see the Idalia National Park in the distance.

Just outside of town we detoured to Mt Slocombe.  The views were well worth the visit and we spent some time wandering around the flat top of this mountain.

Then it was on through the Welford National Park, across the Barcoo River and on to Jundah where we had lunch in the pub, chatting to the Irish backpacker staff.  Jundah is a pleasant little town which has a popular Octoberfest celebration.

North of Jundah we stopped at the Native Well which is a water filled rock hole.  We walked around the nearby river course which is dry at the moment.  We could see plenty of bright yellow ochre clay on the dry river banks

A bit further on we came to the Swanvale Jump-Up.  Jump-ups are flat topped hills similar to South African table top mountains and US mesas.  The have quite steep sides and flat tops.  The Swanvale Lookout has impressive views.

Then it was on to Stonehenge where visitors "sign" their names in rocks alongside the road.  We also saw XXXX Hill which is marked by a large XXXX beer can on a pole.

From Stonehenge it was back to Isisford, a day trip covering about 400km.
