Lake Eyre and The Painted Hills

Our 2 hour scenic flight from William Creek over Lake Eyre and The Painted Hills is a highlight of our travels.  We flew over Anna Creek Station, Australia's largest cattle station, towards Australia's largest lake.  It's impressive even though there's no water in the lake so we flew over salt flats.  Whilst the salty crust is white, the muddy "goo" underneath the crust is black.

Lake Eyre has been handed back to its traditional owners.

On our way we saw many cattle tracks over land.  Once over the lake we could pick out the black tracks made by emus.  We flew over the lowest point in Australia 50.5m below sea level and we saw the lines on the shoreline which show how the water level retreats as the lake dries up.

After an hour we turned west to fly over the Painted Hills.  These hills are on Anna Creek Station and are not accessible by road.  Only about 800 people have seen these photogenic hills.

The brightness of the colours was surprising with yellow, white, orange and red.

Some of the hills, white with orange tops, looked like the top of a lemon meringue pie.

After 2 hours our pilot, Sarah, delivered us safely back to William Creek.
