Farewell to Mossman

One year after we arrived at the beautiful Rainforest Estate, we packed up and aimed Bruce, the Landcruiser, and BT, our trusty Bushtracker caravan, southwards.  That's not quite correct because we have left the caravan in Townsville for a few weeks after our trip to Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast and from there to Winton for the Grand Opening of the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum, Dinosaur Canyon.

Before we finally said goodbye to our friends and the lovely town of Mossman, we had a few touristy things to do before we left, a final visit to Port Douglas to catch up with friends and a visit to the Whyanbeel Valley Studio and Gallery which used to be Ola Hogrund's Art Glass Gallery and is now owned by DAB friend Liz Showniruk.

We had been promising ourselves that we would visit the Historic Church that we'd driven or walked past almost daily, but never been into, and now was our last chance.

The Church of St David was erected as a timber church in 1899.  This church was destroyed by a cyclone in 1911 and some of the supporting buildings were used as a church until 1952.   Construction began on the stone church in 1912 and this was completed and dedicated in 1952.  The chapel and vestry were added in 1983.  A feature of this lovely historic building is its many stained glass windows.

It's well worth a visit if ever you're passing through Mossman.

On our way south to Townsville we stopped off at the Byerstown Range with it's lookout over Hinchinbrook Island.

Then it was on to The Frosty Mango for a mango smoothie before we hit Townsville once again.
