Exploring Spoleto

We've started to explore the lanes and streets of Spoleto.  Everything seems to be up hill and we should be pretty fit by the time we leave here.  We are picking up bits of Italian - enough so far to order coffee and food and to buy bus tickets anyway.  We still have quite a way to go.  The people here are very friendly and are helpful with the language, so we are getting by.  We still need a map as the lanes twist and turn so it's easy to not end up quite where we were intending to.

Friday is Market Day in Spoleto so we walked down the hill to check out the local markets.  There's a Bric-a-Brac Market next weekend, so we'll check that one out too.  It seems that this is the place to buy everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to clothes, to hardware, to electrical goods and it's very popular with the locals.  We joined the queue to buy our lunch of crusty panini with roast pork from the Porchetta Man - this is a man with a van with a pig and a knife and he slices off the delicious roast pork and crackling straight from the pig.  We saw a number of these vans in the market

On our travels we have been looking for the "moving walkways" which save walking up the hill.  We've spent several days looking for one which is still under construction and won't be completed until the end of the year.  A pity because this one would be most helpful for us.  We did find the one near our apartment which take us to the town; and also found the escalators from the Rocca Fortress which overlooks the town about halfway down to the river - about 500m of escalator which takes about 10 minutes.

In the centre of town is a Roman theatre which has a mosaic floor.

It's spring in Spoleto and there are flowers everywhere.  The huge chestnut trees are covered with spikes of white flowers and at ground level we see colourful poppies, forget-me-nots, irises and buttercups.
