Food Glorious Food

We are certainly not starving while we are in Spoleto.  There is no shortage of good restaurants here and all are good value (we usually pay around 30 euros for dinner including wine for both of us).  The food is fresh, plentiful and above all - DELICIOUS.  We've tried out several restaurants and cafes and will certainly try many more over the next few weeks.

Truffles are a specialty here and our first meal included bruschetta with truffles.  As expected the pasta is to die for.  We usually order "uno per due" and share the courses.  So far we've been to L'Angolo Antico which is popular with the locals and serves Umbrian cuisine.  At Canasta we shared a 3 course seafood menu and returned a few days later to sample more of their menu.  Both of these restaurants are near Piazza Liberta.  Now that we have moved apartments, we're trying out restaurants close to our new home.  Nove Cento has served us a delicious lunch and dinner.  Gnocchi with deer was outstanding as was the beef with rosemary and roasted mixed vegetables.  The antipasto "900" plate provided a mix of all antipasti and was enough for 4 persons.  Snacks and lunches are provided by the Porchetta Man (the one at Piazza Mercato is the best we've found so far) where we order yummy panini with roast pork and the local pizza cafes.  There's also no shortage of gelateria which keep us supplied with ice-cream.

A highlight of our stay here so far was dinner on Friday night at the home of Luciano and Daniella.  We joined some of Norma and Laurie's other guests and 8 of us were driven to Luciano and Daniella's home just outside Spoleto where we watched the sun set over the olive trees and had a magnificent feast washed down with copious amounts of local wine.  A big thank you to Norma and Laurie for organising a fantastic evening.

We're looking forward to experiencing more of Spoleto's culinary treats.

When we choose to eat at home we indulge in the delights of the supermarkets and local markets, delis and fresh pasta shops.  It would take months to sample all of the hams, cheeses and salamis that are available - we're doing our best to get through them.  As we are moving into warmer weather we are seeing summer fruits and vegetables appearing at the fruit stalls - tasty tomatoes and deliciously sweet strawberries are regularly on our menu.
