To the Coast - North of Cooktown

We farewelled Laura this morning for a drive to the coast and a few days camping at Elim Beach, north of Cooktown.  Some fellow campers told us about this spot when we said we would be driving through the Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park to Cooktown.

We followed the same route out of Laura, past the Old Laura Station we visited yesterday, through the south-east corner of the National Park.  Once out of the National Park we passed through Battlecamp and Normanby Stations.

The scenery was stunning, lush, green, dry forest with plenty of trees with bright green leaves.

Just over the top of the escarpment we pulled into a parking area for morning tea before proceeding through Hope Vale, past Table Top Mountain to Elim Beach.  The sand here is white.  There is an area nearby called Coloured Sands and also some gorges which we'll try to explore while we're here.

The Elim Beach Bush Campground is on privately owned Aboringinal Land.  Eddie, the 85 year old owner, runs this popular campground which is right on the beach.

We have been warned about the crocodiles in the area and won't be venturing outside in the dark!
